The co-chair of Wiley Rein's insurance regulation and litigation group is decamping for Nelson Levine de Luca & Hamilton next month.
Lawrence Mirel joins the firm as a partner in its insurance regulation practice, effective February 1. He consults insurers on how the regulatory landscape will impact business.
Mirel's arrival coincides with that of Marc Voses who joins the firm's New York office.
In an interview, Mirel said that he was excited to be a part of Nelson Levine as it works to expand its D.C. presence. He is the sole, full-time practitioner in the office. Mirel added that Nelson Levine was the perfect fit for his practice, because the firm deals exclusively with insurance-related matters.
"The next few years are going to be very critical to the regulation of insurance," Mirel said. He pointed to the recent Dodd-Frank legislation, which created a federal insurance office, noting that previously states regulated the insurance industry.
"The federal government is going to play a larger role in the regulation of insurance companies," Mirel said. "Just what that role is going to be and how it will fit in with the state regulatory authorities will be worked out over the next few years."
Mirel said that for insurance companies, the changes will alter the way the companies do business. "Being able to help them understand what changes are coming and what it could mean to them are going to be my primary responsibilities," he said.
