StartupWeekend rocks.? Having participated in a couple as a panelist, and hosting one at StartupCity Des Moines was one of the most exhilarating experiences. ?I am glad DSMSW returns on Nov 16.? The day?s activities will start with a lunch and learn surrounding social media integration into your web or mobile applications, followed by the traditional SW activities from 5pm Friday to 9pm-ish Sunday.? We are going to take a page from StartupWeekend Lincoln?and bring the attendees something additional immediately after Startup Weekend ends.
Having an idea rocks.? Testing it?among?a 100+ peers is amazing.? Building a product around the idea with people you barely know is exhilarating.? Winning the competition is often described as being able to pitch the idea to the audience regardless of winning the prizes.? We want to see your pitches go one step further toward building a business? and propose Startup Boot Camp DSM.
Teams that get some sleep Sunday night and are back at it Monday or Tuesday maintain their momentum.? So, unless you compete with one of the StartupCity companies, we?d like to welcome you the boot-camp.? Come hang at StartupCity between 1pm-7pm M-F from Nov 19 through Dec 14.? With your team.? Build, test, experiment, and think about your product AND a business around it.? The only payment we want from you ? demo your product at the end of each week during demo day and attend mentorship sessions provided.
The space ? The team spaces will be arranged in two areas of StartupCity and will give you tables, chairs, Internet and coffee.? You?ve tasted entrepreneurship during SW? now taste incubation.
The mentors ? Building a business leverages community experts who can help build your business.? We?ve gathered our active mentors, friends, and thought leaders to facilitate 5 mentor sessions.? They will cover ? legal (formation, intellectual property and employees), marketing (strategy, message, approach), team building (developers, sales, operations, executive), capital (money from friends and family, angels, VCs), advisors (business, coach, accounting, legal?) and perhaps more based upon the need demonstrated by the startups.?? Professionals such as Drew Larson and Jason Stone from the legal profession, Brian Hemesath from tikly, Christian Renaud and me from StartupCity Des Moines and more will facilitate these 1 to 2 hour sessions focused on your businesses.? Though the Iowa startup community will be welcome to attend, we will give priority access to SW members.
The Demos ? consider this an extension of the SW final pitches.? We want you to hone your pitch extensively over this period and will give you feedback with each improvement (or decline).? Time will be dependent upon the number of startups participating, but each team will grow toward a 20 minute pitch goal consistent with the pitch time limits imposed by angel groups, venture panels and competitions.
Ultimately, this experiment exists to see if more Startup Weekend teams in DSM continue building their products and companies. ?If this helps increase the teams? chances of success, and the teams want to continue, we?ll try to incorporate feedback and formalize the event.
