Egyptians pelt Clinton motorcade with tomatoes

CAIRO (Reuters) - Protesters threw tomatoes and shoes at U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's motorcade on Sunday during her first visit to Egypt since the election of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

A tomato struck an Egyptian official in the face, and shoes and a water bottle landed near the armoured cars carrying Clinton's delegation in the port city of Alexandria.

A senior state department official said that neither Clinton nor her vehicle, which were around the corner from the incident, were struck by any of the projectiles.

Protesters chanted: "Monica, Monica", a reference to Former President Bill Clinton's extra-marital affair. Some chanted: "leave, Clinton", Egyptian security officials said.

It was not clear who the protesters were or what political affiliations they had. Protesters outside Clinton's hotel on Saturday night chanted anti-Islamist slogans, accusing the United States of backing the Muslim Brotherhood's rise to power.

The assault on her motorcade came on a day Clinton spoke at the newly re-opened U.S. consulate in Alexandria, addressing accusations the United States, which had long supported former President Hosni Mubarak, of backing one faction or another in Egypt following his ouster last year.

"I want to be clear that the United States is not in the business, in Egypt, of choosing winners and losers, even if we could, which of course we cannot," Clinton said.

Clinton also met the country's top general, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, on Sunday to discuss Egypt's turbulent democratic transition as the military wrestles for influence with the new president.

RIGHTS OF ALL

The meeting came a day after she met Mursi, whose powers were clipped by the military days before he took office.

Mursi fired back by reinstating the Islamist-dominated parliament that the army leadership had disbanded after a court declared it void, deepening the stand-off before the new leader even had time to form a government.

The result has been acute political uncertainty as the various power centres try to find a way to get along in a country that still has no permanent constitution, parliament or government more than a year after Mubarak's downfall.

In their hour-long meeting, Clinton and Tantawi discussed Egypt's political transition and the military's "ongoing dialogue with President Mursi," a U.S. official travelling with Clinton said in an email brief.

"Tantawi stressed that this is what Egyptians need most now - help getting the economy back on track," the official said.

Clinton "stressed the importance of protecting the rights of all Egyptians, including women and minorities".

The talks also touched on the increasingly lawless Sinai region and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Speaking after the meeting, Tantawi said the army respected the presidency but would not be deterred from its role of "protecting" Egypt.

"The armed forces and the army council respects legislative and executive authorities," he said in a speech to troops in the city of Ismailia. "The armed forces would not allow anyone to discourage it from its role in protecting Egypt and its people."

TIES STRAINED

Ties with the United States, which provides Egypt with an annual $1.3 billion in military aid, were strained this year when Egyptian judicial police raided the offices of several U.S.-backed non-governmental organisations on suspicion of illegal foreign funding and put several Americans on trial.

The spat ended when Egyptian authorities allowed the U.S. citizens and other foreign workers to leave the country.

During her speech, Clinton said: "When we talk about supporting democracy, we mean real democracy."

"To us real democracy means that every citizen has the right to live, work and worship as they choose, whether they are man or woman, Christian or Muslim."

"Real democracy means that no group or faction or leader can impose their will, their ideology, their religion, their desires on anyone else."

That was a message she is likely to have repeated in meetings on Sunday with women and Christians, both groups that fear their rights may be curtailed under a Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government.

"She wanted, in very, very clear terms, particularly with the Christian group this morning, to dispel that notion and to make clear that only Egyptians can choose their leaders, that we have not supported any candidate, any party, and we will not," a senior U.S. official told reporters.

AP NewsBreak: Feds OK Fla. access to citizens list

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a victory for Republicans, the federal government has agreed to let Florida use a law enforcement database to challenge people's right to vote if they are suspected of not being U.S. citizens.

The agreement, made in a letter to Florida Gov. Rick Scott's administration that was obtained by The Associated Press, grants the state access to a list of resident noncitizens maintained by the Department of Homeland Security. The Obama administration had denied Florida's request for months, but relented after a judge ruled in the state's favor in a related voter-purge matter.

Voting rights groups, while acknowledging that noncitizens have no right to vote, have expressed alarm about using such data for a purpose not originally intended: purging voter lists of ineligible people. They say voter purges less than four months before a presidential election might leave insufficient time to correct mistakes stemming from faulty data or other problems.

Democrats say that the government's concession is less troubling than some GOP-controlled states' push to require voters to show photo identification.

But Republicans count it as a victory nonetheless in their broad-based fight over voter eligibility, an issue that could play a big role in the White House race. That's especially true in pivotal states such as Florida, Colorado, Nevada and North Carolina.

Republican officials in several states say they are trying to combat voter fraud. Democrats, however, note that proven cases of voter fraud are rare. They accuse Republicans of cynical efforts to suppress voting by people in lower socio-economic groups who tend to vote Democratic.

Colorado and other states have asked for similar access to the federal database being granted to Florida.

After a judge recently ruled against federal efforts to stop Florida's aggressive voter-list review, the Homeland Security Department this past week agreed to work on details for how the state can access the federal SAVE database ? Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements ? to challenge registered voters suspected of being noncitizens.

Florida has agreed that it can challenge voters only if the state provides a "unique identifier," such as an "alien number," for each person in question. Alien numbers generally are assigned to foreigners living in the country legally, often with visas or other permits such as green cards.

Unless they become naturalized citizens, however, these people cannot vote.

The agreement will prevent Florida from using only a name and birthdate to seek federal data about a suspected noncitizen on voter rolls. It's unlikely to catch illegal immigrants who might have managed to register to vote because such people typically would not have an alien number.

Scott, whose administration had sued Homeland Security for access to the SAVE list, said the agreement "marks a significant victory for Florida and for the integrity of our election system."

"Access to the SAVE database will ensure that noncitizens do not vote in future Florida elections," Scott said in a statement Saturday.

In a letter Monday, the department told Florida it was ready to work out details for providing access to the SAVE list. The letter was signed by Alejandro N. Mayorkas, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

It follows a flurry of legal actions between Florida and the federal government. On June 11, the Justice Department said it would sue Scott's administration on grounds that the state's voter-purge efforts violated voting rights laws.

The same day, Scott announced a lawsuit against Homeland Security seeking access to the SAVE list. He said it could be a valuable tool in determining who is a citizen. Two weeks later, a U.S. judge blocked the federal efforts to stop Florida's voter review efforts; the Mayorkas letter soon followed.

A Homeland Security spokesman said Saturday the agency had no further comment.

Department officials told the Orlando Sentinel last month they had concerns about using the SAVE list for voter-review purposes. They said the list's information is incomplete and does not provide comprehensive data on all eligible voters, the newspaper reported.

Scott's administration hopes to restart a suspended voter registration purge that was hampered this year by faulty data and bad publicity. The review, based largely on driver's license information, turned up 2,625 suspected noncitizens registered to vote.

But some were in fact citizens. An examination by the Tampa Bay Times found "just a handful" that had actually voted illegally. Florida officials said access to the federal data will allow a more reliable review of voter rolls.

While some noncitizens who are legal residents may knowingly try to register and vote, others apparently do so unwittingly. After obtaining a driver's license, some assume they also can vote, officials say.

Access to the federal SAVE list may catch such ineligible voters in Florida. They presumably would have an alien number and be listed in state motor vehicle records.

Voter-rights groups expressed concerns about Florida's efforts.

"No matter what database Florida has access to, purging voters from the rolls using faulty criteria on the eve of an election could prevent thousands of eligible voters from exercising their rights," said Jonathan Brater, a lawyer with the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law. "Florida must use a more transparent and accurate process, and must leave enough time for voters targeted for removal to be notified and correct errors," he said.

Some state governments have sought access to the federal database for years. Federal officials told Washington state in 2005 they saw no way to compare voters and the Homeland Security information.

Colorado has sought the federal data for a year. Colorado, which has a Democratic governor but a Republican secretary of state, Scott Gessler, has identified about 5,000 registered voters that it wants to check against the federal information.

Officials in the politically competitive states of Ohio, Michigan, New Mexico and Iowa ? all led by GOP governors ? are backing his efforts.

Gessler said 430 registered voters have acknowledged being ineligible, but an "unenforceable honor system does not build confidence in our elections."

Gessler also is seeking information from jails in 10 of the state's largest counties for persons held on "immigration detainers" since 2010, the Denver Post reported.

Few roads lead to NBA dynasty today

Steve Nash (AP file photo)

How do you get good in the NBA today?

Three ways.

There's the Stink-and-Pray. There's the Build-and-Pray. And, finally, there's the Your-City's-So-Awesome-Your-Prayers-Are-Answered.

This summer, we've seen teams try to improve by all three methods.

As for the Stink-and-Pray, this only works occasionally ? a team flounders, prays that it lands a star in the draft and, hallelujah, it happens. This happened in Oklahoma City with Kevin Durant, in San Antonio with Tim Duncan, even in Cleveland with LeBron James.

This summer, the Hornets nabbed Kentucky's Anthony Davis in the draft. He could be a Duncan-like player, in time.

The Build-and-Pray, this one is tough. That's going on here in Denver, where the Nuggets, like other teams around the league, are building a young, talented nucleus and praying that a couple of guys ascend to an all-star level.

As for the Your-City's-So-Awesome-Your-Prayers-Are-Answered method, well, basically a cool city entices great players, be it Miami with LeBron, New York with Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire, Los Angeles with Chris Paul and, so it seems, Los Angeles with Steve Nash.

The two biggest summer acquisitions, thus far, have been the Lakers with Nash and Brooklyn (yes, the Nets are now in New York) with the re-signing of Deron Williams. Of course, whatever happens with center Dwight Howard will change the landscape of the league. But for now, one could argue that each conference has just a few teams that could honestly contend for a title. The Western Conference's Lakers weren't one of them in June; they are now in July, thanks to Nash, an ageless passing extraordinaire.

And while the Eastern Conference's Nets probably won't eclipse the Heat or Celtics (the Bulls are a question mark, due to Derrick Rose's recovery from a knee injury), the Nets will likely be a top-four Eastern team, thanks to a talented nucleus built this summer. General manager Billy King and assistant GM Bobby Marks made a multitude of moves, signing the point guard Williams, the big man Brook Lopez (19.2 points per game), the versatile stat guy Gerald Wallace and, finally, trading for an all-star shooter, Joe Johnson.

One could argue that the Nets are in too deep with these contracts, notably Johnson, who has four years and nearly $90 million left on his deal (and they gave up a lottery pick for Wallace). But with their inability to nab Howard, the Nets wanted to make a splash heading into a new city and new arena. And Williams admitted the signing of Johnson enticed Williams to pass on his hometown of Dallas and re-sign with Brooklyn.

Oh yes, remember Dallas?

What a situation. The Mavericks were on the top of the NBA world just 13 months ago, freshly minted champions, the LeBron Squashers. But with key players getting older, Dallas' plan was to dump guys, build cap space and sign stars - because in an NBA realm, this city is awesome (major market, championship pedigree, devoted ownership). A summer ago, folks gushed about this summer being when Dallas would reload, possibly with Howard or Williams. The Mavs got neither. Last season, they were the No. 7 seed. This season, they could end up with the No. 7 pick in the draft.

Over in Houston, the Rockets are trying to do the same thing. No, Houston is not New York or L.A., but that city too has some panache in NBA circles. With Brooklyn falling out of the Howard sweepstakes ? the Magic is still looking for a trade partner ? Houston has traded players and used an amnesty on Luis Scola in efforts to have cap space for a superstar (or, specifically, Superman).

As ESPN.com reported Friday, the Rockets are working on an offer to Orlando.

The Rockets also signed international sensation Jeremy Lin to a three-year, $25 million offer sheet, but a source told ESPN.com that the Knicks "will match any offer on Lin up to $1 billion."

But even with Howard, is Houston a contender? The answer is likely "no" right now, but that's the beauty of cap space and having a superstar: You're likely to land another one, assuming you're in an enticing city.

This was seen, of course, in Miami. And now it's gotten to the point where key role players are actually taking a pay cut to play with Miami's Big Three. The biggest get for executive Pat Riley has been Ray Allen, the former Celtic who couldn't beat 'em, so he joined 'em.

Marquee moves

NBA free agency is in full swing. A look at some of the moves that should make good teams great:

Steve Nash to the Lakers. The assist machine joined the Lakers, making Kobe Bryant's life a whole lot easier.

Ray Allen to the Heat. The sharpshooter averaged 14.2 points per game last season. His 3s will complement The Big Three.

Jason Terry to the Celtics. One of the NBA's top sixth men will bolster the bench of the talented veteran-laden squad.

The Brooklyn haul. The Nets acquired four key guys this month ? Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Gerald Wallace and Brook Lopez.

Negotiating: Collaboration A Win-Win Strategy

6:00 PM By Article Directory

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Negotiating: Collaboration A Win-Win Strategy Negotiating: Collaboration A Win-Win Strategy

COLLABORATIVE NEGOTIATING:

Collaborative negotiating is a win-win strategy that can focus the resources of the people involved in the process towards strengthening results, productivity, quality, creativity, and innovation in problem-solving. To use the collaborative approach to negotiating you will have to agree on the aim of negotiations. Before any sort of bargaining can begin, you and your counterpart must define the who-what-where-when-how-and-why of the issue and have a general idea of the objectives and dimensions of a solution.

WHEN USING NEGOTIATING COLLABORATIVELY:

1) Acknowledge the other person's position. Negotiating doesn't require that the two of you hold similar positions of authority. It doesn't require that you like each other. But it does require that you be prepared to treat the other person as an adult, be ready to listen as well as talk, and to recognize that your view is not necessarily the only one. 2) Gain the other person's trust. No matter how logical and factual you are, the other party will doubt your credibility. Good faith commences with symbolic acts like eye contact, shaking hands, pulling out a chair for someone, and it is maintained by consistent honesty. If you want others to level with you, level with them. Although you may feel that an occasional bluff could help your position, don't gamble. The consequences can be disastrous if your hand is called.

1) Identify areas of mutual interest and agreement. Before two people can resolve differences, they must find a common ground where meaningful negotiations can begin. 2) Set a positive accepting tone. The tone of negotiations must be positive. This applies both to what is discussed and how it is discussed. If you have to say something negative, phrase it in a positive way or preface it with a positive statement. Phrase words so that they elicit a positive response to advance your position rather than stop the negotiation. This helps to prevent defensive reactions and promotes affirmative thinking.

1) Be aware of what you are saying and doing. People sometimes become so intent on watching, listening, or speaking to others that they fail to watch themselves. Words, body language, tone of voice, and voice inflection have many ambiguous meanings. Humor is especially troublesome -- it can be interpreted as flippant or sarcastic. Only through self-observation can you be certain that you are conveying the message you want in the manner you want. 2) Maintain a question and answer exchange. The heart of any negotiation is the ongoing dialogue during which negotiators discover each other's feelings, understandings, attitudes, prejudices, and objective views of the situation. It enables you to acquire the proper perspectives, separate actual from fancied needs, isolate the real obstacles, and identify what approach to use in obtaining agreement. Ask specific, open-ended questions, and probe areas of conflict to uncover as much information as possible. Your own answers and statements must be equally candid.

Yoga,?Facebook?and cellphone a?volatile mix

Ben Margot / AP

Yoga instructor Alice Van Ness, left, instructs student Melanie Gurunathan Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at Lifestretch Yoga in Milpitas, Calif. Van Ness has been fired for her disapproving stink-eye glare at a Facebook employee using a cellphone in class.

By The Associated Press

Looks may not kill, but they can get you fired.

That's what a Northern California yoga instructor found after leading sessions at Facebook Inc.'s Menlo Park campus.

The instructor, Alice Van Ness, said she got fired after she glared at a Facebook employee who texted during a class in June.

"The whole point for most people going to yoga is that it's disconnecting from the outside world," said Van Ness, a 35-year-old San Carlos resident who has taught yoga for six years. "If you are bringing your phone into class, why are you even there?"

Van Ness told the Facebook class to turn their phones off after seeing a female employee with a cellphone out. Later, while demonstrating a difficult pose, she caught the same worker typing on her phone. Van Ness said she stayed silent, but shot the woman a disapproving look. The employee stepped out before returning to the class, Van Ness said.

According to a termination letter from Plus One Health Management that was provided to The Associated Press by Van Ness, she was warned prior to the class that she could not enforce a cellphone ban.

David Milani, a representative of Plus One Health Management, declined to comment specifically on Van Ness' case. But he said company instructors who teach at some companies including Facebook are required to allow fitness members to pick up their phones during class.

Van Ness thought it would blow over, until she was fired two weeks later. The Facebook employee was embarrassed and shocked by the "confrontation" with the instructor, the termination letter indicated. The company feared making clients unhappy, Van Ness said.

"We are in the business of providing great customer service. Unless a client requires us to specifically say 'no' to something, we prefer to say 'yes' whenever possible," an official wrote in the termination letter.

Facebook, in a statement, declined to comment on Van Ness' case, saying it's against their policy to comment on decisions made by outside vendors.

Van Ness said losing the job meant losing a third of her monthly income. But since her story went public, she said she landed a new job - where she's keeping the no cellphone rule.?

Coffee Tourism Finds an Upscale Home in Belize ... - Travel + Leisure

07.12.12

201207-b-taradonne_belcampojpg

If milk and sugar distract you from detecting the subtle floral notes in your (twice) daily espresso, it may be time to schedule a vacation to fit your coffee obsession. Visiting a coffee plantation isn?t unlike a trip to wine country?the scenery can be quite similar, with sophisticated tastings to boot?but only recently have we found one where the creature comforts match the standards of your morning cup. The place to go? Belize?s Belcampo, which recently partnered with Blue Bottle Coffee to take their impressive culinary programs into a buzzier domain.

At Belcampo, three- and five-day programs take guests from coffee cherry to cappuccino by learning about harvesting, roasting, tasting, and brewing. Because Belcampo has a focus on preserving Belizean food traditions, things are a bit different than in other parts of the world?rather than tour a factory-style building where roasting happens in massive steel cylinders, local Maya women guide participants through a traditional comal roasting over an open fire hearth.

A guided cupping can help enthusiasts grow their palate (did you know there are three times as many aromatics in coffee than in wine?) and brewing lessons get you feeling like a pro behind a fancy La Marzocco machine. Plus, you?ll learn about the best at-home brewing methods so that you can make the most of your carefully sourced and roasted beans?a souvenir you don?t have to ask twice about.

Armstrong attorney: Lance gets 30-day extension

(AP) ? Lance Armstrong's attorney says the United States Anti-Doping Agency has granted Armstrong a 30-day extension to answer doping charges while the seven-time Tour de France winner challenges the case in federal court.

The move erases the Saturday deadline for Armstrong to either send the case to arbitration or accept sanctions from USADA, which would likely include a lifetime ban from sport and stripping the Tour de France titles he won from 1999-2005.

Armstrong attorney Tim Herman says he has withdrawn a request for U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks to issue temporary restraining order in the case.

A USADA spokeswoman had no immediate comment.

USADA has accused Armstrong of doping during much of his career. Armstrong insists he is innocent and says he never failed a drug test.

0 Inspiration And Advice For Your Next Home Improvement Project

If you will be working on plumbing in your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room, make sure that you know how to turn the water off before you start working. If you start a plumbing project with the water still on, you may end up with a flood in your room that could put you behind your schedule.

When thinking about value in doing a home improvement, kitchens and baths are always a good bet. Home improvements are always a safe bet, but if you have a few thousand to spend, spend it on your kitchen or bathrooms because they are the areas that new home buyers are generally most interested in.

Cover all surfaces appropriately before starting an improvement project. If you are tearing down walls or kitchen cupboards, cover any surfaces that have a finish that might get scratched, including floors and nearby walls. If you are painting, make sure to use a dropcloth on the floor and painter?s tape with paper coverings for features such as doorknobs and light switch face plates.

If you have extra paint left over from a recent project, store it in a glass jar rather than leaving it in the paint can. You will be able to instantly tell what the color is without going through the messy ordeal of opening the lid of the paint can.

Involving your children with your home improvement jobs can be fun, and will help you bond while building their self-esteem. Children are great helpers and enjoy feeling included, so giving them a small job to do makes them feel good about themselves, and this helps you at the same time.

Check your pipes and plumbing regularly. Clogs in sinks, tubs, and toilets can lead to water back-ups. Flooding from back-ups can create an awful mess and cause massive amounts of expensive damage. Slow moving drains can cause rings of dirt to appear in your tubs and sinks, creating an embarrassing issue. It is best to keep on top of and remove clogs regularly.

By redoing your driveway with a new method of surfacing or simply redoing the existing surfacing is a great home improvement job that will make your house look better. Not only will you be able to admire your house, but everyone in the neighborhood will as well.

If water still continues to run from the toilet tank, then you should check the float ball. A float ball that is positioned too high will constantly cause water to enter the toilet?s overflow pipe. A float ball that is positioned too low won?t allow for proper operation. Don?t let the ball touch the tank sides, and replace the ball if it is damaged.

When you are removing something from your home, such as cabinets, always do it slowly and thoroughly. If you are ripping out something, it is not a good idea to rush because you may cause unintentional damage to the surrounding areas. Make sure that when you are removing something, it will not affect anything surrounding it.

The kitchen is usually the room that sells the place. Take a look around and see if there are any inexpensive things you can do to your kitchen to make it look recently update. Get rid of that wallpaper or add hardware to your cabinets. Do whatever is simple and quick, but effective. You will be able to mention the update in you listing and buyers like seeing that.

Going green with your flooring can lead to more green in your pocket when selling your home. Consider a home improvement with environmentally friendly bamboo. Bamboo has become the hot trend in flooring. Not only is it easy to keep clean, but it gives the home an upscale look and lasts for a very long time.

You can see now that there are very simple steps that you can take right away to increase the overall worth and appearance of your home, even if you are operating on a shoestring budget! Put some of these suggestions into practice for a more attractive and manicured home.

One Big Migration Spawned Most-But Not All-Indigenous Americans

genomics show wave of first american migrations

At least 15,000 years ago intrepid Siberians crossed the newly exposed Bering land bridge to arrive in the unpeopled Americas. But was this influx the only ancient wave from East Asia? Researchers have been studying archeological, linguistic and genetic evidence for years in a quest to understand how the first Americans arrived and spread through the continents.

A new large-scale genomic study paints a much clearer picture of these early entrances and distant dispersals that led some people all the way to Tierra del Fuego in a matter of millennia. At least three major waves of migrants from Siberia hit the Americas, but not all of them have had the same reach, according to the findings, which were published online July 11 in Nature (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group).

To arrive at a much-clarified genetic portrait, the researchers collected genetic data from 493 people belonging to one of 52 contemporary American Indian groups from Canada to southern South America. They then compared common genetic variances with those of 245 people from 17 current Siberian groups. The key to this study was isolating the genetic variables to those that were specific to American Indian populations, which starting in the 15th century became obscured by genetic ?noise? from the substantial amount of European and African influence, the researchers noted.

The initial wave, nicknamed the ?First American? group, is the ancestral forebearers of every sampled group from the Yghan in southern Chile to most of Canada?s First Nations groups. But two subsequent groups, ?Eskimo-Aleut? and ?Chipewyan,? followed, contributing genes only to their respective Artic groups. ?The Asian lineage leading to the First Americans is the most anciently diverged,? said David Rich, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School and co-author of the new paper, in a prepared statement. ?The Asian lineages that contributed some of the DNA to Eskimo-Aleut speakers and the Na-Dene-speaking Chipewyan from Canada are more closely related to present-day East Asian populations.?

These later groups were apparently quick to mingle with the established populations in northern North America, so much so that Eskimo-Aleut genes sampled retained only about 43 percent of their later wave ancestor?s profiles (the rest being composed of those from the First American group)?and the Chipewyans retained only about 10 percent of their later-wave ancestry (90 percent of the variances studied belonging to the First American profile).

Based on the current analysis, very little genetic remixing appears to have occurred once groups went their separate ways throughout the continents. The exception is one group in Latin America, namely, speakers of the Chibchan languages, who live in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia. The new genomic research shows that Chibchan speakers today carry both North and South American genetic signatures, suggesting that their ancestors subsequently moved back up the Panama isthmus.

Interestingly, the researchers also found traces of Eskimo-Aleut genetic variants in current-day coastal Siberian populations of the Naukan and Chukchi. So perhaps the Americas weren?t quite to everyone?s liking.

Fifty Shades of Grey Movie: New Details!

The Fifty Shades of Grey movie is moving forward, with two big names now on board. To produce it, that is. Still no word on who will play Christian and Ana.

Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, the team behind The Social Network, will produce the movie version of E.L. James' novel, giving it a credibility boost.

In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal co-chairman Donna Langley said of the film: “At its core, Fifty Shades of Grey is a complex love story."

"It requires a delicate and sophisticated hand to bring it to the big screen. Mike and Dana’s credits more than exemplify what we need in creative partners."

Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy Covers

The books, about an innocent college girl drawn into the world of bondage and S&M by an attractive billionaire, have already sold 31 million copies worldwide.

As for the details everyone's most curious about - who will play Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey - we may have to wait awhile, according to E.L. James.

"We are so far away from casting the Fifty films," the writer tweeted last week. "No one has been ruled out... no one is ruled in. Just so you all know."

Names like the Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Michael Fassbender and Channing Tatum have been floated ... who do you have in mind?

Vote in our polls after the jump!

Ernest Borgnine: An actor with nearly seven decades on screen

Ernest? Borgnine worked in more than 200 films and TV shows, including McHale's Navy. Ernest Borgnine, who passed on Sunday, won an Academy Award in the 1995 movie "Marty."

He was a tubby tough guy with a pug of a mug, as unlikely a big-screen star or a romantic lead as could be imagined.

Yet Ernest Borgnine won a woman's love and an Academy Award in one of the great lonelyhearts roles in "Marty," a highlight in a workhorse career that spanned nearly seven decades and more than 200 film and television parts.

Borgnine, who died Sunday at 95, worked to the end. One of his final roles was a bit part as a CIA records-keeper in 2011's action comedy "Red" ? fittingly for his age, a story of retired spies who show that it's never too late to remain in the game when they're pulled back into action.

"I keep telling myself, 'Damn it, you gotta go to work,'" Borgnine said in a 2007 interview with The Associated Press. "But there aren't many people who want to put Borgnine to work these days. They keep asking, 'Is he still alive?'"

RECOMMENDED: 50 Best movies of all time

And yet people put him to work ? and kept him working ? from his late-blooming start as an actor after a 10-year Navy career through modern times, when he had a recurring voice role on "SpongeBob SquarePants," became the oldest actor ever nominated for a Golden Globe and received the lifetime-achievement award last year from the Screen Actors Guild.

Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife and children at his side, said spokesman Harry Flynn.

With his beefy build and a huge orb of a head that looked hard enough to shatter granite, Borgnine naturally was cast as heavies early on, notably as Sgt. Fatso Judson, the brute who beat Frank Sinatra's character to death in 1953's Pearl Harbor saga "From Here to Eternity."

More bad guy roles followed, but Borgnine showed his true pussycat colors as lovesick Marty Piletti, a Bronx butcher who, against all odds and his own expectations, finds romance with a wallflower in "Marty," adapted from Paddy Chayefsky's television play. Borgnine won the best-actor Oscar, and the film picked up three other awards, including best picture.

It turned out to be Borgnine's only Oscar nomination, yet it was a star-making part that broke him out of the villain mold. Borgnine went on to roles in such films as "The Dirty Dozen," ''The Wild Bunch," ''The Flight of the Phoenix," ''The Poseidon Adventure" and "Escape from New York," but after "Marty," the veteran sailor's most memorable character appropriately came with the title role of the 1960s TV comedy "McHale's Navy" and its big-screen spinoff.

Mischievous con man McHale, commander of a World War II PT boat manned by misfits and malcontents, was far closer in spirit than shy Marty or savage Fatso to the real Borgnine, who had a cackling laugh and a reputation as a prankster.

Despite his big-hearted nature, Borgnine was typecast as a thug from the start, playing bad guys in a series of Westerns including Randolph Scott's "The Stranger Wore a Gun," Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden's "Johnny Guitar" and Gary Cooper's "Vera Cruz" and Victor Mature and Susan Hayward's historical saga "Demetrius and the Gladiators."

AP Exclusive: Abuses surface at Legion school

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Dozens of women who attended a high school run by the disgraced Legion of Christ religious order have urged the Vatican to close the program, saying the psychological abuse they endured trying to live like teenage nuns led to multiple cases of anorexia, stress-induced migraines, depression and even suicidal thoughts.

The women sent a letter this weekend to the pope's envoy running the Legion to denounce the manipulation, deception and disrespect they say they suffered at the hands of counselors barely older than themselves at the Rhode Island school. For some, the trauma required years of psychological therapy that cost them tens of thousands of dollars.

A copy of the letter was provided to The Associated Press by the letter's 77 signatories, a dozen of whom agreed to be interviewed about their personal problems for the sake of warning parents against sending their children to the program's schools in the U.S., Mexico and Spain.

"I have many defining and traumatic memories that I believe epitomize the systematic breakdown of the person" in the school, Mary told The Associated Press in an email exchange. She developed anorexia after joining in 1998, weighed less than 85 pounds when she left and dropped to 68 pounds before beginning to recover at home. "The feelings of worthlessness, shame and isolation that are associated with those memories are still vivid and shocking."

Mary, who asked that her last name not be used, blamed her eating disorder on acute loneliness ? girls were prevented from making close friends or confiding in their families ? and the tremendous pressure she felt as a 16-year-old to perfectly obey the strictest rules dictating how she should walk, sit, pray and eat.

It's the latest blow to the troubled, cult-like Legion, which was discredited in 2009 when it revealed that its founder was a pedophile and drug addict who fathered three children. The Legion suffered subsequent credibility problems following its recent admission that its most famous priest had fathered a child and the current Legion superior covered it up for years.

The Legion saga is all the more grave because its late founder, the Rev. Marcial Maciel, had been held up as a living saint by his followers and a model of holiness by Pope John Paul II because of his ability to recruit men and money to the priesthood, even though the Vatican knew for decades that he had sexually abused his seminarians.

Pope Benedict XVI took over the Mexico-based order in 2010 and appointed envoy Cardinal Velasio De Paolis to oversee a whole-scale reform of the Legion and its lay branch Regnum Christi. But the reform hasn't progressed smoothly, with defections from disillusioned members and criticism that some superiors remain locked in their old ways.

The all-girl Immaculate Conception Academy, located in Wakefield, Rhode Island opened two decades ago to serve as a feeder program for the Legion's female consecrated branch, where more than 700 women around the world live like nuns making promises of poverty, chastity and obedience, teaching in Legion-run schools and running youth programs.

Because of dwindling enrollment ? 14 seniors graduated last month ? the school recently merged with a Legion-run school in Michigan; in Mexico two programs merged into one that produced 10 graduates this year.

The school's current director said things have changed dramatically recently and many of the spiritual and psychological abuses corrected. But she acknowledged the harm done, apologized for the women's suffering and asked for forgiveness.

"For any errors made by our order in the past, we do apologize," said director Margarita Martinez. "We are sorry these young women have suffered and been harmed in any way."

In an email response to AP, Martinez noted that not all students experienced the same "level of negativity" as those who wrote the letter, and that regardless the movement was listening to everyone's experiences as it undergoes a process of Vatican-mandated reform.

Megan Coelho, 30, recalled how pairs of consecrated women would visit her regularly as a child in northern California where she was homeschooled; they told her tales of the wonderful high school in Rhode Island where she might find a vocation and grow closer to God. Coelho, who wanted to be a nun, left home when she was 14 to join.

By junior year, the occasional migraines she had suffered became frequent and debilitating as pressure to conform to the rules and highly structured schedule increased. The migraines would paralyze one side of her body, making her collapse at times. She developed facial tics. Her eyesight became blurry.

"As sweet as they (her consecrated directors) were I was counseled not to tell my parents about it because then my parents would take me home," she said, referring to the movement's goal of keeping members at almost any cost. "No one contacted my family. Nobody took me to the ER or got me a doctor's appointment."

Eventually, Coelho got so sick she returned home, and the migraines stopped. Feeling better she returned, only to suffer a migraine her first day back. She left for good six months before graduation.

Coehlo's story is the first on a blog she and other former pre-candidates, as the girls were known, started this past spring, a seemingly cathartic experience since many had never shared their pain with their onetime classmates. The blog, www.49weeks.blogspot.com , is an astonishing read ? testimony of a twisted and cruel methodology applied to girls at their most vulnerable age, when even under normal circumstances girls are prone to self-esteem issues, peer pressure and bouts of depression.

Instead of finding support from friends and family, these teenagers were isolated from their families 49 weeks a year, told to unquestioningly trust their spiritual directors and confide only in them. Obedience to the minutest of rules, they were taught, reflected their acceptance of God's will.

They write about their feelings of inadequacy, humiliation and loneliness, and of idolizing their smiling consecrated counselors. They paint the depths of their depression when seemingly overnight they were told they didn't have a vocation and should go home.

"Looking back, I was suicidal," said Sarita Duffy, now a 28-year-old mother of three in Fort Cambpbell, Kentucky. "I never took a bottle of pills or slit my wrists, but I was fully content with the possibility of never waking up again."

In a phone interview, Duffy said she equated being rejected by the movement with being rejected by God, and lost her Catholic faith for years as a result. She acknowledged she can't blame the movement for all her problems but said the "zero self-worth" she felt after being rejected precipitated her descent into depression and rebellion.

"Why do you hate me God? I hate me," Duffy wrote in her journal on June 10, 2002, four years after she entered as a freshman and about a week before she received the final "no" to work in the movement's missionary program.

One of the blog entries was written by Lourdes Martinez, a former counselor or formator at the school from 2000-2005. She admitted that she and her consecrated colleagues would classify the girls into potential leaders, "normals" and those who should be sent home. This would enable the directors and counselors under them to manipulate the girls and prey on their vulnerabilities, giving special attention to those they wanted to keep as potential consecrated leaders and devise strategies to get rid of those they wanted to send home, she said.

Often, information from the weekly reports written about each girl's development would be shared with the priests who heard her confession ? a striking violation of privacy. The priests could then reinforce the directors' decisions in confession with the girls, she said.

"So she's hearing this from everyone and thinks it's the Holy Spirit talking. And we would say 'Yes, of course,'" Martinez told the AP in a phone interview from Monterrey, Mexico.

Martinez described an almost "Lord of the Flies"-like situation in which the counselors were barely older than the girls under their care, with no experience in adolescent development. The counselors themselves lived with the fear that they must obey the rules and their superiors or risk violating God's will.

Martinez signed the letter to De Paolis because she wanted to show solidarity with those who suffered. But she stressed that she believes the reform will work because she knows and trusts the new leadership and is working with them to improve.

Not everyone suffered so much, and not everyone has joined the call to close the program; of the 270-odd people on a closed Facebook group that served as the basis for the blog, 77 signed the letter.

And by many indications, things have changed dramatically for the better at the school, with girls allowed more time with families and much less emphasis on sticking to the rules.

"People who are going into the pre-candidacy and are starting out will not find the same experience as those people did," said Sasha Jurchak, 25, who left consecrated life in May because she simply decided it wasn't for her ? not because of any problem with the program.

In an interview, she noted that De Paolis has instituted new regulations that forbid consecrating girls as young as 18 after a six-week candidacy program. The new rules require a years-long process of assessment similar to that of traditional religious orders. Recruitment is no longer the primary aim, she said. The girls' mail is no longer screened and they have more free time. Girls can wear shorts and pants for athletic activities instead of long skirts and stockings.

Margarita Martinez, the school director, said other changes include better reflection from counselors on when to invoke "God's will" in requiring something of the girls.

She disputed claims that the school failed to provide adequate medical care for sick girls, saying the policy has always been to notify parents and get proper care.

Asked if Regnum Christi was prepared to provide financial assistance to women who needed psychological counseling when they left, she said each case would need to be considered individually.

"The reform process has taken time. It has been a learning process for everyone involved. And we still have a long way to go," she wrote. "But I strongly believe we are moving in the right direction, with the Holy Spirit as our guide."

The letter to De Paolis from alumni said it's too risky to wait and see how it all turns out.

"Today's girls deserve more than to be guinea pigs during the experimental stages of the reform process which may or may not prove in the end to be authentic," it concluded.

Ted Nugent's drummer flees police in golf cart

Bangor Police Department

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

People are always fleeing police, but usually it's in a vehicle where they have a chance to get away. That wasn't the case for Mick Brown, drummer for Ted Nugent, who tried to make his escape in a golf cart, according to the Bangor, Maine police department.

According to the police department, Brown, 55,?reportedly stole a golf cart after a Bangor concert featuring Nugent, Styx and REO Speedwagon?at Bangor's waterfront pavilion.

Brown, who was reportedly intoxicated, evaded several people who tried to stop him and somehow picked up two women along the way, the department says on its Facebook page.

"As?(officers) attempted to stop Brown, he accelerated past them, past a third officer and when a security officer got close enough to stop him, Brown allegedly shoved the officer," the police reported. "At that point two other security officers physically removed Brown from the cart and placed him on the ground."

Brown was arrested and later released on $4,000 bail, and faces a court date of Aug. 15 for charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, driving to endanger, theft, and assault.

But perhaps the best line from the police report reads, "No damage was reported to the cart although two traffic cones were damaged, one still under the cart, significantly so."

Ted Nugent himself has been in the news lately for his political opinions, most recently for suggesting that the South should have won the Civil War.
