NBA: Venerable old Boston Celtics are just looking old

Few expected the aging Celtics to win another championship this season, but no one predicted they'd take a losing record into the All-Star break, and that they'd show so little fight.

Sure, the Celtics are old, but now they look dead. Or at least their hopes for success do.

Forget about winning a championship. Making the playoffs could be a stretch.

How did this team fall so far so fast?

Last year, the Celtics took a 40-14 record into the All-Star break. Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo were all voted to play in the All-Star Game, and Doc Rivers coached the Eastern Conference All-Stars because Boston owned the best record in the conference.

This year, they're 15-17 and have lost five in a row and seven of their last eight. Only Pierce and Rondo, who replaced the injured Joe Johnson of Atlanta, will represent the Celtics in tonight's All-Star Game.

The Celtics are on a pace to finish 31-35 (.470); they were 56-26 (.683) last year. The 23 times they won 56 or more games before last season, they never posted a losing record the following season. Their largest single-season drop-off was from 57-25 in 1987-88 to 42-40 in 1988-89, when a bad back limited Larry Bird to six games.

The Celtics are on pace to post their second-largest drop in winning percentage (21.3) from one season to the next. They fell 21.9 percent from .402 (33-49) in 1995-96 to .183 (15-67) in 1996-97, when they tried to lose in order to get Tim Duncan in the draft.

Pierce, Garnett and Allen may no longer rank among the NBA's elite, but they're still good players that many teams would love to have. Rumors are already flying that Allen will be dealt by next month's trading deadline. Rondo may not be Derrick Rose, but he's still one of the NBA's best point guards.

So, why is he having so much trouble finding the open man? And why have the Celtics lost to such less-talented teams as Detroit, Toronto and Cleveland? Sure, injuries have cost Boston, but plenty of teams have played short-handed.

The stretch of winning nine of 10 seems like an aberration. Take that away, and the Celtics would be only 6-16.

The Celtics can still defend, but they have all sorts of trouble scoring. Even after allowing Oklahoma City 119 points on Wednesday, the Green still have surrendered the third-fewest points (88.53) and the second-lowest field goal percentage (41.8) in the NBA. But they're only 26th of the 30 NBA teams in scoring (89.41). They haven't averaged less than 90 points for an entire season since 1953-54, before the shot clock.

The Celtics have taken the fewest shots in the league because they don't have the ball as often. They rank last in the league in rebounding, offensive rebounding and second-chance points. Why? Because they're old, slow and not very mobile. They're also not very big. Danny Ainge built a smaller team to try to keep up with Miami, which doesn't have an overpowering center.

If the season ended today, the Celtics would be the eighth seed and play first-seeded Miami in the opening round. Such a playoff series might not last the five games it took Miami to eliminate Boston in the second round last year.

The Celtics must finish no worse than sixth in the Eastern Conference to avoid facing Miami or Chicago in the opening round of the playoffs, but they're closer to ninth (1-1/2 games) than sixth (four games).

There's plenty of blame to go around, from Ainge to Rivers to the players. There's still time to salvage the regular season and maybe even win a playoff round if the Celtics can somehow get everyone back and remain healthy, but that seems unlikely.

A sense of doom hangs over the franchise. The end is near. If they're not traded this season, Garnett and Allen probably won't return after their contracts expire this summer, and luring free agents to Boston has never been easy.

Bill Doyle?s Celtics midseason grades

Paul Pierce: B
The Celtics' captain passed Larry Bird and moved into second place on the franchise's all-time scoring list, but his shooting percentage has plummeted from a career-high 49.7 percent last year to 41.7 percent this year, by far his lowest in Rivers' eight seasons as coach. One reason for the drop ? 31.1 percent of Pierce's shots have been 3-pointers this season, compared to 29.1 percent last year. Pierce played his best while Rondo was out with a wrist injury, but he seemed lost when Rondo came back.

Kevin Garnett: B
Yeah, he's old and slow and can't jump as high, but the Celtics are the NBA's best defensive team when he's on the floor. Without him, they're not.

Rajon Rondo: B
Rondo shot more after he returned from his wrist injury, but his scoring boost came at the expense of Pierce and Allen. He must figure out a way to keep his teammates involved. He must also learn to keep his cool. Getting suspended two games for throwing the ball at a referee showed a lack of leadership.

Ray Allen: B
Allen has fallen off after a fast start. He can still shoot, but he needs help getting open. Opponents have trapped Allen and Pierce while daring Rondo to shoot.

Jermaine O'Neal: D
Playing on two bad knees, O'Neal deserves credit for taking charges and blocking shots, but he gets into foul trouble and needs to score and rebound more.

Brandon Bass: B
Acquiring Bass for Glen Davis and Von Wafer was Ainge's best move. The 6-foot-8 Bass held his own under the boards, and his jump shots helped spread the floor. But he has missed the last five games with a knee injury, and the Celtics miss him and his 11.6 points a game.

Mickael Pietrus: C
Pietrus said he plans to do more in the second half than just shoot 3-pointers. That's good because he has made only 4 of 21 attempts from 3-point range in his last five games.

Avery Bradley: C
The kid can defend, and he's shooting a bit better, but he can't run an offense.

He came on strong after a slow start, but then got hurt again.

Marquis Daniels: D
He's shooting only 32.2 percent and rarely plays anymore.

He has been injured for most of the year and not very effective when he has played.

He gets pushed around because he's so thin, but he should play more so the Celtics can figure out whether they can expect anything out of him in the future.

In limited playing time, Moore has shown he can make 3-pointers, but not much else.

He's no Bill Russell, but the Celtics weren't counting on him to be one.

Sasha Pavlovic: Incomplete
He has been nagged by a wrist injury for much of the season, but it remains a mystery why the Celtics signed him.

Doc Rivers: B-
Rivers must be wondering why he decided to come back for another season. Injuries have been a major problem, but this has not been his finest coaching job with Boston. He's not the problem, but neither has he been the solution.

Danny Ainge: C

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) ? An Alabama woman is under guard at a hospital after she gave birth following her arrest in the death of her 9-year-old stepdaughter, who authorities say was forced to run for three hours as punishment for lying about eating a candy bar.

Jessica Mae Hardin, 27, was transferred from the Etowah County Detention Center to a hospital on Wednesday, sheriff's office spokeswoman Natalie Barton said. Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp confirmed that Hardin had given birth hours after she was arrested. He said he didn't know whether the newborn was a boy or a girl.

Hardin and her mother-in-law, 46-year-old Joyce Hardin Garrard, were arrested and charged with murder on Wednesday in the death of Savannah Hardin.

Roger Simpson, who lives up the hill from the doublewide trailer where Savannah lived with Jessica and her father Robert Hardin, said he saw the girl running in the yard. When emergency vehicles arrived at the home hours later, he said he thought they were there for the pregnant woman.

Alabama law requires people who are arrested to be informed of the charges against them in an initial appearance within 72 hours. Barton said Jessica Hardin's hearing will likely be held once she is released from the hospital.

The Alabama Department of Human Resources has been called in to create a safety plan for Jessica's newborn, as well as the couple's 3-year-old son, Harp said.

Department spokesman Barry Spear says the older child has been placed with a relative, and the plan is for the infant to be given to the same relative when it leaves the hospital. Speak said he could not reveal with whom the children were placed.

Savannah had a bladder condition common to young girls that meant she shouldn't have chocolate because of the caffeine content, Harp said. He said there is no evidence that the condition contributed to her death.

Authorities say Savannah was forced to run in the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 17. At around 6:45 p.m. Jessica called 911, telling dispatchers Savannah was having a seizure and was unresponsive.

The girl was taken to Children's Hospital in Birmingham where she was kept on life support while Robert Hardin, a contractor with the U.S. State Department, took eight flights to return to Alabama.

"It must have been horrible," Harp said, "especially for what he saw when he got back."

Robert Hardin made the decision to pull Savannah off life support, and she died on Monday.

Her death was ruled a homicide by a state pathologist and preliminary reports show she was extremely dehydrated and had a very low sodium level ? a chemical necessary to prevent seizures and dehydration.

Harp said he may pursue capital murder charges, which carry a possible death sentence. He said his office is interviewing neighbors who had seen Savannah running and expects to have a decision on the charges in a day or two.

The district attorney said he was not aware of any defense attorneys for the two women. He said in their initial appearance they will be advised of the charges against them and offered a public defender.

Bond for Garrard and Jessica Hardin is set at $500,000 each.

Obamacare Contraception Mandate Attacks Religious Liberty

Today is Ash Wednesday ? the first day of Lent ? the beginning of 40 days of prayer and fasting observed by Christians across the country, culminating in the Easter feast. Likewise in April, Jews will gather to celebrate Passover, one of many traditions observed under the religious freedom that the U.S. Constitution was designed to preserve. Now, though, that freedom is under direct attack by the very government that purports to represent the people, and that is but the first step in Obamacare?s re-writing of America?s blueprint.

This week, two more Christian colleges?joined other religious institutions?in fighting back against that attack when they filed lawsuits against the Obama Administration for imposing an anti-conscience mandate under Obamacare. The controversial regulation forces almost all employers to provide health insurance coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives, and sterilization, without a co-pay.

Heritage?s Sarah Torre writes that?Geneva College, a private institution in Pennsylvania associated with the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, and?Louisiana College, a small Southern Baptist school located in the middle of the state, have deeply held moral objections to the mandate and are left with no choice but to take their case to court:

With an offensively?narrow?religious exemption that will cover only some formal houses of worship, the mandate leaves many religious employers who hold moral objections to abortion and contraception without recourse. The mandate places the many non-exempted religious employers in an untenable situation: forced either to violate their beliefs by providing coverage of morally objectionable services or forgo providing employee health insurance altogether and pay hefty fines for doing so.

To date, seven lawsuits have been filed in response to this mandate, and those legal actions are but the tip of the iceberg of opposition to the Administration?s despotic directive.

The controversy began last August when the White House announced the anti-conscience policy as an interim final rule. Individuals and leaders from various faith backgrounds, including Roman Catholic, Jewish, evangelical, and Protestant traditions?spoke out, prompting President Obama to announce an ?accommodation? in response. But the proposal announced at a February 10 press conference would have done nothing to resolve the moral problem at the heart of the matter. In fact, more than 300 leaders to signed a?letter?deeming the gesture ?unacceptable.?

Moreover, the so-called ?accommodation? turned out to be nothing more than a smokescreen, since the Obama Administration ultimately finalized the August version of the rule that had caused the controversy in the first place. Adding insult to injury, the White House finalized the rule within hours of holding a press conference in which the President implied further changes ? repeating the disregard for accountability to the American people first seen when they were told that Congress would have to pass the bill to find out what was in it.

The fight, though, extends beyond the issue of the anti-conscience mandate and speaks to the dangerous, endemic flaws at the root of Obamacare. In a new Heritage video, several political leaders speak out against the anti-conscience mandate while warning that this first assault on religious freedom is but a taste of what?s to come under the President?s health care law. George Weigel, a prominent Catholic scholar, says that Obamacare puts our society?s core in jeopardy:

What is at stake here ultimately is whether civil society will survive, and whether voluntary institutions or voluntary associations ranging from the traditional family to multimillion member organizations like the Catholic Church to small businesses will be allowed to function only if they imitate the government, only if they imitate the state.

Truly, the state will attempt to refashion society using Obamacare as its cudgel and awl.?Matthew Spalding, vice president of American Studies at The Heritage Foundation,?writes that this new, unaccountable regime of unelected bureaucrats ? with regulatory authority over one-sixth of the American economy ? will issue regulations that will fundamentally alter Americans? way of life. Spalding says the anti-conscience mandate is but one of the ways that individuals will be affected under this new order of governmental dominance:

What is happening has little to do with health care or even public policy and everything to do with the role of government in the most immediate and intimate matters of our lives. All is subject to government control, regulatory dictate, and administrative whim. Nothing will be allowed outside of the new regulatory scheme: no independent state programs, no individuals or businesses permitted not to participate, no true private market alternatives.

In announcing his school?s Obamacare lawsuit, Louisiana College president Dr. Joe W. Aguillard declared, ?The time for silence is over. Louisiana College will not sit by and allow this or any government to usurp our God-given religious freedoms and our time-honored Baptist heritage.? Like Louisiana College, Americans collectively are witnessing their time-honored liberties being trampled upon. They should not sit idly by, either. And Congress should repeal Obamacare forthwith in order to preserve the people?s freedom.

LONDON (AP) ? So many beautiful clothes, so little time: London Fashion Week produced its busiest day Monday, with blockbuster shows including Burberry Prorsum, Christopher Kane and McQ by the Alexander McQueen house all jostling for editors' attention.

The fourth day of the weeklong fashion extravaganza saw a futuristic punk aesthetic marry beaded florals at Kane, the hottest young designer showing in the British capital, while Burberry's design chief Christopher Bailey dished up a luxurious collection of English tweed, herringbone and corduroys.

Observers said Kane's autumn and winter show, one of the most eagerly anticipated of the week, highlighted the unorthodox creativity and emphasis on craft that set London's young designers apart from those in other fashion capitals.

"Young British designers these days are reaching ever stronger heights with digital printing," said Hilary Alexander, a veteran British fashion writer. "The emphasis on arts and crafts, the embellishment of fabric ? they're not afraid to experiment."

Kane, who is known to pair traditionally feminine details with tough futuristic touches, delivered a memorable collection that featured purple leopard prints, intricately beaded floral separates and sheer purple and red dresses embroidered with oversized velvet flowers. Black leather detailing kept the look modern and edgy: Thick leather piping adorned most garments, and some of the dresses also had black leather shirt collars and sleeves.

One of the standout outfits was fire-engine red from head to toe: A long red fluffy turtleneck, paired with red wide-leg trousers with a black leather trim down the side.

"I liked the colors, the beading ? it was so lovely," said television presenter Alexa Chung, who sat in the front row along with model Yasmin Le Bon, American Vogue's Anna Wintour and Samantha Cameron, the wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Over at Burberry, the emphasis was on classic Englishness. There were riding jackets galore, as well as velvet quilting, herringbone wool and tweed caps ? and of course incarnations of the brand's most famous garment, the trench coat.

Bailey, who has been at the helm of Burberry for more than a decade and is credited with revitalizing the once-fusty brand, said he wanted to merge city style and country living.

"I like the idea of celebrating the country, celebrating the town," he said.

Bridle leather straps, shearling parkas and quilting were evocative of the horse-riding country lifestyle of the English upper class, while cute owl drawings and appliques on some of the collection's T-shirts and sweaters, as well as gold metal fox belt buckles, were a fun and quirky take on the "country" theme.

A huge range of coats and jackets made up much of the collection. Some were cinched in with candy-colored belts with bows, while others had masculine tailored shoulders and large pouches. Cropped, down-filled puffer jackets were paired with tweed ruffled pencil skirts, giving the ladylike look a sporty twist.

Colors were rich and autumnal, with mustard, burgundy, blackcurrant and forest green, while wide horizontal stripes in gray, navy and honey kept the look young and vibrant.

Bailey likes to put on an entertaining show. This season he closed his display with a clap of thunder, a realistic torrent of rain falling on the show tent's glass windows and a finale of umbrella-toting models walking down the catwalk to clear confetti.

What could be more British?

"I quite like celebrating rain," said Bailey. "I like the romance. I quite like the melancholy."

There was also an autumnal feel at the debut of the McQ line, a new offering from the fashion house of the late Alexander McQueen, now headed by Sarah Burton, who gained worldwide fame last year for her design of Kate Middleton's wedding gown.

The McQ line is designed to be a more affordable range for a younger, less affluent crowd. The prospect at a first look at Burton's legendary handiwork drew a frenzied crowd Monday night, and they arrived to find the catwalk ? in fact the entire stage ? thick with fallen leaves. One end of the hall was transformed into dark woods, giving the entire set a forested feel.

Most of the models had strange, saucer-like hairstyles, giving them a space-age, inhuman feel, and many wore military-style coat dresses embellished with beading and embroidery. Thigh-high lace boots and long trench coats added to the look. A Scottish influence was felt throughout, with some of the male models dressed in kilts.

Some of the black flared dresses with color bursts on the front were dramatic, but overall the line lacked the imaginative spark long associated with the McQueen house.

Other designers showing Monday included Erdem, Pringle of Scotland, Osman and Peter Pilotto, whose slim-line colorful dresses drawing on Japanese and Chinese traditions drew an impressive response.

Show up. Day in, day out.
