Charles Manson record to be released on vinyl after Kickstarter campaign

A prison photo of Charles Manson (ABC News)An independent record storeowner is preparing to release a record of largely unheard Charles Manson songs, after running a successful online fundraising campaign to sponsor the effort.

"Be a part of history, help spread the music of Charles Manson," Manuel Vasquez wrote on the project's Kickstarter page. "This project is not about death, drugs,1969, etc... It is about MUSIC."

Vasquez, 26, says he plans to issue 999 vinyl pressings of the songs, which were recorded by Manson in prison. Manson, 77, is serving a life sentence for conspiracy in connection to the murders of Sharon Tate and Rosemary LaBianca. The leader of the infamous Manson Family reportedly gave his personal blessing to Vasquez's effort but will not receive any proceeds from the sales.

"I've gotten some hate mail from it. There are people not appreciating the release of music by him," Vasquez told the Los Angeles Times. "People say they don't understand why I'd want to associate myself with this or why I would be interested in releasing it."

Contributors to the Kickstarter campaign were given the chance to have their name associated with Manson's music. Those who donated enough to the project will have their name included on the album's liner notes and will receive a piece of artwork crafted by Manson himself.

Still, even Vasquez admits that his project's popularity has to do more with the Manson name than the quality of music itself.

"Most people won't like it. It probably requires an acquired taste," he told the L.A. Times. "It's really low-fi, mono."

A video posted on the Kickstarter page contains a recording of one of the forthcoming album's songs:

This isn't the first time controversy has been associated with Manson's musical offerings. In 1993, rock band Guns N' Roses released a cover of Manson's "Look At Your Game Girl," which was originally recorded by Manson in 1967 to help day for his criminal defense fees. There was a heated dispute within the band over whether to cover the song. Eventually, Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose recorded his version of the tune with only one of the band's official members joining him for the performance. The song and accompanying album were considered both commercials and critical failures.

DALLAS (AP) ? Glenn Smith left a lucrative job at a Dallas-area technology firm for an early retirement of restoring Soviet fighter jets and flying to exhibitions across the country.

He died Saturday when his nearly 30-year-old training plane nosedived during an air show in eastern Iowa and crashed into a field, authorities said. Spectators watched the 59-year-old Smith's plane erupt into flames, followed by a cloud of gray smoke. Nobody on the ground was hurt.

Smith had been flying in formation with other members of the HopperFlight team at the Quad-City Air Show in Davenport.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash. Senior air safety investigator Aaron Sauer said Sunday that a preliminary report on the crash is expected within a week, but a final report will likely take several months.

He said inspectors would examine the few remaining pieces of the plane, as well as Smith's autopsy and toxicology reports.

Smith did not make a mayday call or suggest any sign of distress before the crash, according to Sauer and Randy Ball, a good friend of Smith's.

Ball said Smith was a meticulous flier who would map every step of a flight plan beforehand.

"They practiced the day before and everything went fine," Ball said.

Smith was a longtime technology entrepreneur whose company was acquired by Tyler Technologies, a Dallas-based company that develops software for local schools and government clients, in 1998. He remained an executive at Tyler until 2006, the company said in a statement.

After retirement, Smith focused on collecting and flying vintage planes. He kept two rare Soviet MiG-17 fighter jets at the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum in Tyler, about 90 miles east of Dallas, museum president Carolyn Verver said.

Ball, who also owns a MiG-17, said he spent countless hours working on planes with Smith. Smith loved to preserve planes so others could see and appreciate them, Ball said.

"Those guys are literally using their own money to save a part of history and share that history with everybody else," he said.

Smith was also the newest member of the "Hoppers," according to the team's website. The Hoppers are a group of pilots who privately maintain and fly L-39 fighter jets at air shows and other exhibitions. The L-39 Smith flew Saturday was made by a company in the former Czechoslovakia in 1984, according to a Federal Aviation Administration registry.

"He kept it absolutely immaculate," Ball said.

Part of the Hoppers' mission is to introduce American audiences to planes produced and used by the country's former enemies, according to the website.

"It is important for people to remember and for young kids to learn, so that history does not repeat itself," the website said.

According to the HopperFlight site, Smith had been a pilot for a quarter-century and has a commercial pilot's license with an additional instrument rating certification. Details about Smith's flight history from the FAA were not immediately available Sunday.

A squadron of planes flew over the crash site Sunday in the "missing man" formation before the air show continued.

Wes Scantlin Arrested After Drunken, In-Flight Ruckus

Puddle of Mudd singer Wes Scantlin was arrested at an Austin, Texas, airport for allegedly becoming drunkenly combative with a flight attendant.

According to Austin P.D. sources, Scantlin got into a verbal argument with a flight attendant over alcohol while on board a flight to Los Angeles.

Security says Scantlin was upset because the flight crew wouldn't sell him booze.

Scantlin's was bound for L.A. but the flight was re-routed to Austin's Bergstrom International Airport for an emergency stop; Scantlin was booted off.

The rocker was arrested and booked for public intoxication, and he could also face additional federal charges of interfering with a flight crew.

If a judge determines that Scantlin caused a mid-air ruckus, he could face prison time for a cocaine charge he is currently on probation for.

As well as for public intoxication and interfering with a flight crew, natch.

However, deciding on whether to lease or purchase depends on how long?you?ve?been in business and how strong is your customer base.

Startup to 3 years

If you?re just starting your restaurant the best thing to do is to lease for the following reasons:

1. The best locations for new restaurants are in established retail centers with strong foot traffic. Often the only option in those locations is to lease.

2. We all know that restaurants are a high-risk business notorious for having a short life span. Short-term leases make it easy to cushion your losses. If at the end of your lease your business is struggling, or you need to close down, you can leave without financial or legal penalties. Also if for some reason you did have to break the lease, it?s much easier to break a lease (and less damaging to your credit history) then it is to break a mortgage.

Just make sure that you get qualified professionals to represent you and act in your best interest as well as do your homework beforehand so that you can ensure that you get the best deal.?
